A large amount of portable devices, such as CDs or DVDs, means a lot of searching. If they are not properly labeled and you need something in particular, you will end up browsing disk after disk. The same can happen if your folders are not well organized on your computer. Advanced File Organizer can be used to catalog the structure of folders from your hard drive or from an external memory device and organize everything by category. Instead of going through the actual folders, you can check a well made catalog and see exactly where it is.

Downloading Advanced File Organizer will not take too much of your time because the setup package weighs in at less than 2 Mb. The installation process will go just as fast, so you will have the software up and running in no time.

The software's interface resembles an explorer window, so finding your way around it should not be an issue. You will find a navigation pane on the left side of the main window and the contents of the folders can be viewed in a file list on the right. When running the program for the first time, the navigation pane will be blank. This is because the program is not a file navigator, but an organizer, like its name suggests. Creating a catalog requires adding folders to the navigation pane by clicking an Add button from the toolbar. You can add any folder, with or without its contents, in any order you want. Clicking an item will display its path, along with other properties beneath the file list. Any changes you make to a file or folder in the program's interface, like renaming it, will not affect the actual folder from your computer. This is how a catalog is created. You can save your work in the program's own format, so that it can be accessed again later. This way, when needing to find something without navigating through the whole computer, you can access a saved catalog and get a clear idea where it is due to the program's search function.

For better organization, you can switch to a categories view with the aid of a button from the toolbar. The interface will look and feel the same way except for the fact that you will have a better grip on the navigation pane. Creating a new category requires clicking on the Assistant button from the toolbar. This will bring up a new window, divided into two halves. You can create new categories on the left half the same way you create folders in a navigation pane. Organizing folders is done by simply dragging them from the right half of the Assistant window to a category from the left half.

The same actions can be made for CDs, DVDs, flash drives or any other portable device. When reading one of them, you can use Advanced File Organizer to read and save the structure of their files and folders. This way, you will be able to see the contents of an USB stick, for example, without needing to plug it in.

Pros

Advanced File Organizer lets you create catalogs which will spare you from endless browsing or checking disk after disk. Creating such a catalog can be done by simply browsing your folders.

Cons

The interface is not old, but a useful software like this could use a better looking design. Advanced File Organizer is like writing down the contents of a removable memory device. But instead of using a pen and a piece of paper, you can just click and drag and use a search function when looking for something.
